i’ve fallen off the face of the earth lately. you must know why, right? yeah, i’ve been spending lots of time and energy on trip planning. i know i have recently bitched about it but don’t forget that i had to plan for 30 days away from home. i had to make decisions regarding the transport, the budget, the attractions, the accommodation and the food. i will barely ever be in the same place twice. 30 days of letting the new in! i’m excited! imagine that during each day of this trip i will eat exciting unknown food, i will sleep in a new bed and i will spend all my time experiencing new smells, sights and sounds! i will be in tokyo the longest. but the maximum of 11 days spent there will be barely sufficient for the world’s largest metropolis. and at least one of those days will be a day trip outside of the city. but perhaps i should just show you my itinerary (or let’s just call it my plan). bucharest > tokyo via london. then 10 days visiting the following: aomori > towada > hakone > kobe > miyajima > kyoto > a few islands of the seto inland sea > osaka. from osaka we fly [...]

The post TRIP PLANNING AND WHY I DO IT appeared first on little aesthete's blog.

sesame is not big in my country. one can occasionally find the white kind sprinkled on top of pastries. or mushed in halva. but not much else. i first discovered the aromatic toasted black sesame seeds mixed in with white ones on my berlin kebabs. i liked them both so much that, when faced with a shelf full of little jars full of white and black sesame in a turkish grocery, i got one of each. i started using both kinds when cooking as i am always looking for new ways to add flavour to my dishes. and i haven’t looked back ever since! i use both kinds in savory dishes. i toast the seeds a little and i sprinkle them over the food. i find black sesame works best with vegetable stews. it gives them a wonderful interesting edge. i also use it in the breading of chicken. use little or thin pieces of meat as the seeds burn easily. but remember that a sprinkle of toasted seeds will bring a nutty extra to any savory dish. beside the flavour, they have health and nutrition benefits as well. instead on using the seeds, you can also try the tahini (the sesame [...]

The post SESAME – BLACK AND WHITE appeared first on little aesthete's blog.

ron mueck is an australian-born, london-based hyperrealist contemporary artist. all his pieces are undersized or oversized for a subtle difference in perception. and the length he goes to reproduce the tiniest of details is hallucinating. his early career was that of a puppeteer and prop maker. things changed when charles saatchi liked his work and helped him transition to fine art by buying and commissioning his pieces. mueck’s first break was his father’s post-mortem portrait, dead dad. i was introduced to my first mueck in february 2006, while on a business trip in aarhus, denmark. i visited a few smaller museums and galleries and left the huge aros museum for last. they had recently opened a paul maccarthy show, but i was smitten by mueck’s 5m high boy. it was quite late so i had the piece to myself. i could inspect it as closely as i wanted. the details are so minutiously rendered that the off scale is the only thing giving the sculpture away. the pants are actually a tailored piece, the flexed feet are flawless, and so are the nails. in 2012, i couldn’t miss the mueck mini-show of his latest work, on saville row, at hauser & wirth. there were only his 4 latest [...]

The post RON MUECK IN PARIS – DO NOT MISS IT! appeared first on little aesthete's blog.

(chitra is romanian slang for cheap person) i started using kitra as my stage name about one year ago. but the whole kitra story is quite old. it started in targoviste, where i was born. i was working and saving my earnings in order to go to college, to be able to afford a dorm room and so on. i wanted to come to bucharest, to the university of fine arts. so i graduated from high school as an electrician. but i got lost for a long time before i got to college. i got lost for about five years. in [...]

The post KITRA LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE appeared first on little aesthete's blog.

street art is making things more interesting, even in traditional italy. below, you have a selection of the pieces that i ran into during my recent little tour. the most exciting piece i found was a mr. a by andre, in siena. as the town is small and very picturesque, i was surprised to find the whimsical top-hat wearing character. but it did fit in very well, i must say. the talks recently posted an interview with the man behind monsieur a, andre saraiva. a french-portuguese artist who is also, admittedly underground, famous for the fact that he was married to paris-based electronic pixie uffie. this is what i found in bologna. this is what i found in pisa. this is what i found in venice. i spent most time in florenece so most of the pictures are from there. i found lots of street art in the mercato di sant’ambrogio/architecture college area. the city is marked by a variety of traffic sign interventions. you guessed it: clet rules the city! he may be french by birth but he has moved to italy 18 years ago. and he’s currently based in, of course, florence. for a while, i wasn’t sure if all the [...]

The post STREET ART FEATURING CLET IN ITALY appeared first on little aesthete's blog.

mood board no. 9 is a reflection of what’s on my mind now that i have just come back from italy. italy was generous with us. we had great weather in spite of the forecast. we visited bologna, milan, florence, siena, pisa, fiesole and venice. i saw pheasants in the wild for the first time in my life. we had marinated carciofi – artichokes. and lunch in a local tavola calda - warm tray. we, of course, discovered a great local gelato place in florence – gelateria dei neri. it’s artisanal, modest and it will rock your world. the locals love it and that’s always a great sign. and last, but certainly not least: on saturday, i went to the coolest party in florence. i will come back with all the details and the pictures! italy seems like a non-stop international congress of tourists. it’s constantly invaded by all nations, shapes and sizes. some dragging around stubborn luggage or children. some trampling each other on the attractions sites, taking pictures and buying souvenirs. do yourselves a favour: try to avoid this invasion. find the places where the locals hang. that’s the real italy. i was assaulted by the hoards of tourists, but also by thousands [...]

The post MOOD BOARD NO. 9 appeared first on little aesthete's blog.
