alternative christmas tree by oana lohan is this year’s third tree!
oana lohan is an architect/illustrator. i love her black and white drawings and i have been following her work ever since i met her. especially because she lives in the neighborhood of my childhood and she loves to document it, grit and all.
i don’t have a christmas tree. the last christmas tree i remember is a fir tree from my childhood, many, many years ago.
recently, i realized that many of us believe that everything that can be called street art should be beautiful. whatever that means.
well, i don’t believe beauty applies in street art.
so i built a christmas tree with bits of bucharest street art from december 2015.
in my family, street art is, together with writings, grafitti, paste-ups and all the utilitarian symbols on the walls, just like the notes for the network of natural gas or the traffic signs.
they are not beautiful, they are just present and they add clarifications or explanations just like foot notes in books.
enjoy!
thank you, oana, for this urban tree discussing the need or decoration or the lack thereof.
