visitors who went to see ascension, anish kapoor’s installation in basilica di san giorgio in venice were not impressed with the experience. supposedly one of the biennale’s highlights, the work was meant to be a whisp of smoke raising to the ceiling and becoming a seemingly solid pillar, playing on the material/immaterial theme. the first visitors claimed that the smoke column failed to materialize.
the officials and kapoor himself argued that there is a lot of subtlety involved and that the mechanism is working fine now.

i like it but i understand why people think it may have not worked.

Seen and unseen where the form loses in itself. Definitely an Anish Kapoor idea. From the video it looks like he got it. I would think it did not work all the time and I presume, that’s why some people were disappointed.

it’s unexpected for him to have a failure, since it was not the first time he showed this piece. i wonder if it was his own team or an italian team who put together the whole thing…
