i first saw them on tv, cca. ’92: i was at a friend’s house and their hit, entre dos tierras, came on and got me hypnotized. it took years until i laid my hands on their full work, thanks to a friend who was equally impressed. it would be hard for me to pick favourites: their albums are quite different and there are many good songs on each.
one of my major ghosts, vocalist enrique bunbury, wrote the cryptic lyrics i took up spanish to understand. in 1997, hds broke up and he started a solo career. in 2007, they re-united for a 10-concert world tour i somehow managed to miss although i was in spain at the time…
Ponme fuera del alcance del bostezo universal
nos veremos en el exilio o en una celda
ponme fuera del reposo en mi historia personal
soy un ave rapaz: mirad mis alas!
place me outside the reach of the universal yawn
we’ll see each other in exile or in a prison cell
place me outside the comfort of my personal history
i’m a bird of prey: look at my wings!
(excerpt from deshacer el mundo-undo the world)
so, try to see beyond the old-fashioned videos and check out the melodious strength of this underrated band
