One cannot prepare for Hiroshima. You think you know all the facts but in the middle of this beautiful city you’ll find the memorial park full of paper cranes and pictures and free guides telling you the stories. It’s heartbreaking. The park was invaded by hundreds of visiting pupils.
I spent the most of the afternoon checking out thrift stores, which are amazing in Japan. I wanted so many things but the prospect of carrying them around killed my drive. If you ever visit Japan, come with empty luggage. You’ll thank me for this tip. I’m a very light packer and I still brought back more than twice the luggage weight. I arrived in Nagasaki very late and I slept like a log in Asuka’s room.
