roa is a ghent-born street art heavy weight whose signature is large scale black and white pieces depicting animals.

one rainy afternoon, i went to the underground stolen space, a london gallery exhibiting roa. the belgian street artist was there at the time, receiving loud congratulations from an american.

hypnagogia is a 2-space exhibition (inside and outside the gallery). the opening coincided with the launch of roa’s first book: “roa: an introduction to animal representation” – a limited edition of 500 and the gallery still has 18 of the hand-made, signed and numbered copies.

the first part is indoors and it includes a rather rare form of upcycling: he paints on found objects.

the second part consists of his large scale murals across london.

here’s more random street art from london:

as it happens, the current issue of the saatchi gallery magazine is dedicated to street art and guest edited by cedar lewisohn.

highlights? muralissimo (kiev street art festival), graphic surgery (amsterdam collective), patti astor from fun gallery, robin rhode, shepard fairey, madC and rob del naja aka 3d from massive attack.
