march 2025 finds is here!
BOOKS
1. nascut in urss by vasile ernu was hard to get through. the author was born in what is now ukraine, but used to be a part of the ussr. this is a series of short stories detailing the soviet life style. i do not match his very high level of nostalgia. i definitely do not miss my childhood spent in socialist romania. my country was never part of ussr, but any romanian of a certain age is familiar with most of the references in the book.
2. i zipped through violets by kyung-sook shin, on the other hand. i like reading contemporary stories, preferably by asian female authors. it’s probably because for decades, i read almost exclusively male authors. i recommend the book for a glimpse into a girl’s life in seoul and the country side.
COMICS
3. i read niente di nuovo sul fronte di rebibbia by zerocalcare. my beginner intermediate italian is no match for this convoluted and slangy story. i like zerocalcare and his universe, i recommend any of his fumetti or netflix adaptations.
MAGAZINES
4. i picked up noma in kyoto in an airport. it covers in wonderful detail the story of how noma went to kyoto for a pop-up restaurant in 2023. the insight and the pictures are incredible. i loved it!
5. billie eillish is on the cover of the latest issue of british vogue. i liked how they went with her style, they didn’t try to make her look girlier.
MUSIC
6. jackson wang has new music. check out gbad, the perfect summer hit, and high alone.
7. i love mariazinha as covered by jp simoes.
8. i went to see j. bernard live recently. my favourite from his recent album is left bathroom sink.
9. i came across this old gem: porque te vas by jeanette.
10. i’ve been checking out romanian trappers. i like a few tracks by very young noua unspe. the fact that i saw him holding rick rubin’s book in an interview didn’t hurt.
11. ca7riel & paco amoroso continue their world take over with two coachella concerts.
TV SERIES
12. i liked exploding kittens, it was funny.
PODCASTS
13. fashion neurosis goes on strong with guests bobbie gillespie, susie cave and hanif kureishi. wonderful!
14. michelle obama and side kick brother craig have a new podcast. they welcome, among others, tracee ellis ross, my recent style icon, and issa rae, another fav.
15. i listened to a few episodes of trevor noah’s podcast, what now. i recommend the elon effect episode. and there’s a more recent one called is elon musk the ultimate scam artist? added to my episodes.
16. good bad billionaire has new shows. i’ve just listened to the sir james dyson and the markus persson episodes.
ARTICLES
16. this is an old david lynch article from 2018 but it’s still interesting.
it’s a short list for once. actually, i’ve listened to endless podcast episodes, but they were all in romanian. also, idk if i’d recommend any.
