for our last day trip from lisbon, we took the bus from sete rios and went 170 km south to porto covo, in alentejo.

have you ever thought it was possible to wander along the coast and just pick your beach? well, this is the place to do just that.

after checking a few beaches from up the cliff: tiny beach, populated beach, empty beach, unreachable beach, nudist beach, we climbed down to praia grande – it was the nice little restaurant with its very necessary rest rooms that convinced us – and walked on to the next gulf: a nearly empty beach, our closest towel neighbours were at least 50 m away.

we had all the privacy, sun and relaxation we wanted. the place was great for picking up exotic sea shell – the ocean tide was quite obvious during the day.

the atlantic was cold, like everywhere else in portugal – only the wet suit clad surfers dare stay in the ocean for long – but i was able to cool down every once in a while during my sun bathing.

silence apart from the sound of the waves or the occasional sea gull shriek. the perfect beach day!
