i have been into walter van beirendonck‘s work ever since the 90s when his explosive shows and colourful take on fashion caught my eye. to get an idea, click here for the paris brand’s store designed by marc newson in 1996. walter’s brand, w.&l.t. (standing for white and lethal thrash but also obviously his nickname) went under the radar for a while and before adding him as a friend on facebook i admit i had lost touch with his work. fortunately, my ignorance does not mean that he was not doing things.
among many others, he has recently had the opening for his retrospective at the momu fashion museum antwerp (14.09.2011 – 19.02.2012). it’s called dream the world awake. the 54-year old member of the famous antwerp six talks to tim blanks in an interview for thecorner.com. for a comprehensive summary of his work, go to his website.
i like his kind of inclusive fashion with a special sense of humour.
check out the wild knights installation – a video collaboration between nick knight’s showstudio, simon foxton and walter, using archive images.
i get the impression that it’s time for me to go to antwerp already! and, since i totally missed the margiela show a couple of years ago…dream the world awake and the fact that this is the home city of one of my favourite bands, deus, is certainly reason enough for me to book a flight.
breaking news: if you happen to be in paris tomorrow, l’alcazar hosts a party for walter’s momu retrospective. expect a performance with videos, live models and music by maxime iko (cockorico/la vie en rose). sounds like fun!
